Who is the Metaversity Hackathon for?

The Metaversity Hackathon is targeted at students who are at least the age of 18 in the United Arab Emirates as of the time of registering for the hackathon and students who are actively enrolled in a university in the United Arab Emirates. There is no restriction in field or background of students, however, students are advised to review the prerequisites and requirements of the challenge before registering.

What experience is required?

Preferred prior experience and skills:

  • Unity (if the project will be built with MRTK) or C# with Visual Studio or VS Code (if the project will be built with StereoKit), is advised
  • 3D object design and modelling, user-experience design, storyboarding, creative ideation, design thinking

What if I don’t have any relevant experience?

Creativity and exploration are at the heart of the hackathon and we're looking to create a diverse and inclusive space to let students flourish. If you don’t have relevant technical programming experience, you can gain the necessary skills during the technical readiness sessions. In addition to this even if technical programming is not your expertise. a successful team requires not just programmers and animators, but can also include designers and artists for 3D, graphics, user experience, and sound, in addition to project managers.

Can I form a team prior to the hackathon?

You cannot register as a team. Individuals register for the Metaversity Hackathon, and must then form teams with other accepted participants. We want participants to make new connections organically, and network with other students that they’ve never met before.

When and where will the hackathon take place?

The Metaversity Hackathon will take place in a hybrid format. Some sessions such as the hackathon launch event, in-person hands-on training, 2-day hackathon competition and the judging and awards ceremony will take place in-person at the Khalifa University Campus. In addition to this some sessions such as the online webinar training and Mixed Reality Skills Challenge will take place online. Please refer to the hackathon schedule for detailed information.

When do individual registrations and team applications open and close?

  • Individual hackathon registrations: February 1, 2023 – February 27, 2023
  • Team applications: March 17, 2023 – April 14, 2023

Is there a fee to apply or to participate?

There is no fee to apply or to participate. However, all accepted participants must secure their own travel and accommodations for the duration of the event.

Will food be provided at the in-person sessions at the Khalifa University Campus?

Yes, food will be provided during the in-person sessions on campus.
